Twister Shimmer Quilt for Kona’s 30th Anniversary

November 20, 2014

Hi fellow quilters,

Today is my turn on the Robert Kaufman’s 30 Quilts for 30 Years blog hop to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Kona cotton.

I was so excited to be invited to participate in this fun project.  I’ve enjoyed reading the other designers blog posts about their quilts and getting to know more about the designers and Robert Kaufman Fabrics.  Can’t believe that there are now a whopping 303 Kona colors.  Isn’t that amazing!

I would like to talk about the process of making my quilt and I have a giveaway, too, so keep reading for a chance to win!!!

My quilt for the 30th anniversary is called Twister Shimmer.

QM135 kona twister shimmer 30th ann bh

The original colorway that I used to create the Twister Shimmer pattern (QM135) last year is shown below.  I had fun using my Kona color card to choose a range of shades in four colorways.  The pattern includes a chart showing the 22 Kona fabric ID#’s.  My friend Karen Ytzen pieced the quilt and it was hanging in my booth last year at Houston 2013 quilt market.

Twister Shimmer QM135 with Kona FQs Houston 2013 Market

For the 30th anniversary version, instead of hand picking Kona colors, Nichole at Robert Kaufman suggested that I feature one of their pre-cut fat quarter bundles.  This was a bit of a challenge since I wasn’t sure a bundle would contain enough shades of four colorways needed for the quilt, however, the Sunset fat quarter bundle has a nice variety of shades and can be broken into four groups so I dove into this yummy bundle!

The bundle contains 23 fat quarters.  I used 22 of the fat quarters plus Kona Black for the background.

Twister Shimmer QM135 30th Anniv Sunset FQ placement

I created a grid of squares following the fabric placement guide.  For this 72″ x 72″ throw size quilt, 5″ squares are sewn into a grid and then cut out with the Lil’ Twister tool designed by Marsha Bergren of Country Schoolhouse Designs.  This popular tool is very easy to use and quite addictive.  It’s so fun creating designs that look difficult yet are very easy to piece.  The Twister Shimmer pattern also includes many other quilt sizes.  If you use the larger Midi Twister tool and 6-1/2″ squares, you can make a queen or king size quilt.  And, if you want to make smaller projects you can use the Primitive Pinwheel or Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheel by Primitive Gatherings to create a 41″ wallhanging or 23″ miniature.

Here’s some Lil’ Twister cutting in action….

Magically, after cutting out with the Lil’ Twister and sewing the units back together, the square grid turns into the Twister Shimmer quilt!

After completing the quilt top, I sent the quilt off to long arm quilter, Kristi Ryan, who did a wonderful job with the quilting.  She used a silver thread in the colors and black thread in the background.  Since we were on such a tight deadline and Kristi sent the quilt directly to Robert Kaufman, I haven’t seen the completed quilt yet, just in photos and I really like the results!

Closeups of Kristi’s quilting…

The Twister Shimmer pattern is very versatile and you can play with shades of your favorite colors to achieve the look you want.  Play with your Kona color card or Kona fabric stash to create your very own quilt palette.  For example, here’s an example of what the quilt looks like using shades of two colors, red and blue, rather than four different colors, and adding white for accent.  Wouldn’t this make a great patriotic quilt?

Ask for the Twister Shimmer pattern at your favorite quilt shop (they can order it from distributors or me) or you can order it here.

Thank you for visiting my blog and have fun with the blog hop and enjoy all the designers posts.  The complete schedule is listed in my last blog post. One of my favorite quilts in the Lookbook is Raceway by Alyssa Lichner.  I love the curves and the overlapping effect.

Robert Kaufman is doing a grand prize giveaway at the end of the blog hop which will include 3 of my twister patterns that work great with Kona solids and RK blenders like Fusions including Twister Shimmer, Twister Sparkler, and Twister Illusions which are all shown here:

Quilt Moments 3 New Patterns + Houston Quilt Market

October 24, 2014

Hi fellow quilters,

We’ve been very busy preparing new quilt samples and patterns. The Houston quilt market starts tomorrow!

We wish we could be there to see all the great people and all the new quilting goodies.  We’ll have a booth at the spring quilt market in Minneapolis.

Here are the  3 newest patterns that will be available soon.

You can see more info about the patterns: size options, fabrics used, etc. at What’s New on our website.

Panel Twist QM139 – great for large prints or panels and the Lil’ Twister tool.

Spinning Wheel Runners QM140 – pick a large print and have fun making easy 4-patch kaleidoscopes with squares and rectangles.

Spinning Wheel Quilts QM141 – includes 4 sizes throw to king.  More fun with easy 4-patch kaleidoscopes!

Here’s a peek at the fabrics I used for one of my Spinning Wheel Runner samples

The fabric is called Sausalito Cottage by Holly Holderman for Lakehouse Dry Goods and it is in quilt shops now.  I just love these large hydrangeas.  The 14″ ruler is shown along the selvage to give you an idea of the scale of the fabric.  The hydrangeas are about 6″ in diameter.  The lengthwise repeat of the fabric (along the selvage) is 12″.  To make any of the Spinning Wheel Runners you only need 4 repeats of a large print (at least 8″ repeat) so in this case you need 1 1/2 yards.  You will have some fabric leftover that you can use for a border or piece together for a scrappy backing.

This is the tablerunner size of Spinning Wheel Runners

Here’s a close up of one of the large blocks.  It looks difficult, but trust me, it’s very straightforward.  It is made completely with squares and rectangles, and the easy 4-patch kaleidoscope technique of layering and cutting strips from four identical pieces of large print fabric that I use for all my kaleidoscope patterns & book so you’ll be addicted before you know it!  Same process for the Spinning Wheel Quilts, just more blocks and more fabric:)

Here are the quilt samples that are on display in fabric company booths at the Houston quilt market.

QM135-Twister-Shimmer-RK Kona 30th Anniversary

The quilt is in the Robert Kaufman booth at market.

Quiltmaker 100 Blocks Volume 9 Blog Tour

April 29, 2014

Thank you for visiting Quilt Moments’  blog.  I am so excited to be included once again in the fabulous Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks magazine and join in the fun blog tour with my fellow block designers.  Volume 9 hits newsstands May 6th.  Today I’ll share some ideas on how to use my block and give you a chance to win several goodies.   Keep reading to the end to see what you could win!

My block, Pinwheel Polka #866, is shown on page 58 of the magazine.  I love using large print fabrics in my quilts and often put what I call “4-patch kaleidoscopes” in my block centers which are made from sets of four identical squares.  For this block, instead of using squares, I used four matching rectangles and made stitch n’ flip corner with black squares to create the pinwheel effect.

Foreman #866 Quiltmaker100BlkVol9

I made the block using  the large black and white floral from the Nouveau Rouge collection designed by Alice Kennedy for Timeless Treasures shown below.  Would you like a chance to own some of this fabric?  Keep reading…..

Here is an image of what a twin size quilt looks like using 12 blocks set on point with an easy alternate block and 5″ wide border of the feature floral print.

Pinwheel Polka #866 Twin Quilt Foreman

The large print shown on the border is what is used for all the 4-patch block centers.
I have many patterns and a book featuring this easy technique which you can see on my website, but
here are the construction highlights:
1) Cut or rip a piece of large print fabric containing at least 4 fabric repeats lengthwise down the middle and save one of these pieces for the wide borders
2) Cut out and layer four identical pieces of the fabric following the design repeat and pin around the perimeter with flathead pins carefully capturing the same motif through all fabric layers
3) Rotary cut strip sets 3-1/2” wide and then sub-cut them into 3-1/2” x 6-1/2″ rectangle sets. (Usually square sets, here rectangle sets)
4) Take a rectangle set, and rotate the four identical rectangles to create a 4-patch rectangle kaleidoscope. With the rectangles, you have two  different rotation options so you can choose your favorite look!

One of my favorite Quilt Moments patterns that uses both 4-patch rectangles and 4-patch squares is Tilt-A-Whirl (QM103).  In this pattern I use smaller blocks finishing 8″.  Here is a version using the black and white butterfly print shown below.

8054-J 72dpi

QM103 Tilt-A-Whirl with Flor D'Luna

I never get bored trying out different fabrics with the easy 4-patch kaleidoscope technique since it always yields fun surprises.  Who would have imagined that using this simple butterfly print with 4″ butterflies could create such cool effects in the blocks?

QM103 Tilt-A-Whirl with Flor D'Luna CLOSEUP

Have fun choosing a large print to make your own block.  Florals work great, but you can also use novelty prints and kids’ prints.  My examples today feature black & white fabrics, but of course you can choose from a whole rainbow of colors!  Adding easy “4-patch kaleidoscopes” to the center of blocks is a fun way to spice up your blocks so give it a try!

I love sharing my quilts during trunk show talks and teaching classes at quilt shops and quilt guilds, so I was thrilled when Sandy Fogarty of Quilters Quarters in North Carolina invited me to teach on a quilting cruise next year!

I’m excited to share the news that I’ll be the featured teacher on Quilters Quarters Quilting Cruise  on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Sea’s Caribbean cruise February 22 – March 1, 2015.  I’ll be teaching classes showing my kaleidoscope techniques during the days at sea and enjoying the many cruise activities and adventures at the ports of call.  Please come join us on this great adventure!  We all experienced a very LONG winter, especially here in Minnesota, so wouldn’t you love to make plans for a warm trip next winter?!  You can find all the information and reserve a spot here.

Now for the goodies.  Leave a comment on this post by midnight Sunday, May 4th, for a chance to win a copy of the new Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 9 magazine, or a 3 yard cut of the beautiful Nouveau Rouge floral print featured in my block.

For a second chance to win, please “like” Quilt Moments on our new Facebook page and leave another comment letting us know you liked us:)

Then remember to visit Quiltmaker and all the other blogs for more entertainment and chances to win prizes.

Enjoy all your quilt moments!

Ribbon Rings in Quiltmania Special Spring 2014 Edition

April 25, 2014

Hi fellow quilters,

The new Quiltmania Special Spring 2014 magazine has just arrived at newsstands.  It’s a lovely issue containing 13 projects varying in size from pillows to runners to quilts.

QuiltMania Spring2014Cover

I’m thrilled to share that a version of my Ribbon Rings design (QM128) is included in this issue.  The quilt was pieced by my friends Pam Matthews and Cindy Luby, and quilted by Cindy.  They used fabrics from the Charleston Farmhouse collection designed by Felicity Miller for Free Spirit Fabrics.  Beautiful job ladies!  Thank you for making such a lovely version of Ribbon Rings!  And thank you Carol & Christelle at Quiltmania for selecting the quilt to include in your lovely magazine!

I love how the setting for the magazine version differs from the four layouts shown on my Ribbon Rings (QM128) pattern cover & back.  The pattern cover shows the “rings” and “garden” layouts which I pieced using Galaxy Java batiks.

The pattern back shows this “Tic Tac Toe” layout pieced by my friend Karen Ytzen using a light and dark strip pack of Anthology batiks,

and this scrappy “garden” layout version made by my friend Katie Rubatt with fat quarters of a Moda 3 Sisters collection.

The quilt is made from just one simple block rotated to achieve the different layout options.  You can use yardage, fat quarters, or pre-cut 2-1/2″ strips.  The pattern includes six sizes: topper, runner, small throw, large throw, twin & queen.

Until next time, enjoy all your quilt moments!
