February 12, 2017

Hi fellow quilters!

Join me tomorrow, February 13, on American Patchwork and Quilting Radio with Pat Sloan.  Tune in at 3:00 p.m. Central Time (4:00 p.m. EST).  If you didn’t catch it live, that’s OK, it’s a podcast so you can listen to it anytime by getting the American Patchwork & Quilting Radio show podcast or clicking on this link in Pat’s blog to listen to the show.  I’m the 3rd guest so my 12 minute segment starts at 28:00 minutes into the program.

I’m so excited to be a guest on Pat’s show!  To mark the occasion and to celebrate Valentine’s Day, I’m giving away a full/queen size kit of the Kaleidoscope Symphony quilt shown below.  This red & pink version seems an appropriate colorway for the season of love…check out this previous blog post to see a fun quilt walk with many, many more examples of Kaleidoscope Symphony quilts made in different fabrics.

During the radio show / podcast, Pat & I will chat about how I started Quilt Moments and also talk about the company, Twister Sisters, which is the new home of the popular Twister tools.  Twister Sisters is co-owned by me and my friend Lisa Amundson of Around the Bobbin.

The Twister Planner is the first pattern that we created as Twister Sisters which is a handy guide that walks you through 15 different quilt sizes runner to queen so you can easily create any size scrappy twister quilt that you wish with the Lil’ Twister tool (for 5″ sqs), Midi Twister (for 6-1/2″ sqs) or the Twister (for 10″ sqs).  You can see the tools and many other twister patterns by Twister Sisters, Quilt Moments, and Around the Bobbin at Twister Sisters.

In October we introduced a new smaller size twister tool called the Mini Twister tool  which can be used with 2-1/2″ strips and 4-1/2″ sqs.  The fun feature of the Mini Twister size is that you can make 4-patches using four different 2-1/2″ strips and then twist so each pinwheel has four colors for the pinwheel points!  The Mini Twister tool includes the pattern for this fun table runner.  If you are careful with your cutting, you can make a potholder or coasters with the leftover pieces.

Exciting Twister News, Newest Patterns, and New Fabrics

October 23, 2015

Hi fellow quilters,

I haven’t posted in a very long time and it’s quilt market time again, so I have lots to share!

The latest news is that my friend, Lisa Amundson, of Around the Bobbin, and I purchased the popular twister tools and copyright (Lil’ Twister, Midi Twister, & Twister) from Marsha Bergren of CS Designs on September 30th.  The new company for the tools is Twister Sisters.  Lisa and I don’t have “real” sisters but definitely are sisters in our quilting & fabric addictions, so it seemed like the perfect name for our new venture.  You can read more about it on the website here.

TS Logo Final

Quilt Moments won’t be at quilt market, however, I have a new pattern, and yes, it happens to be a twister friendly pattern:).  Twister Blooms, QM144, includes 4 sizes miniature to queen!  You can see more info on this pattern and all 8 of our twister friendly patterns here.

Kensington Kaleidoscope

The cover quilt is made with Java Batiks by Freshwater Designs for Maywood Studio / E.E. Schenck.  I simply cut 5″ squares,  sewed them into a grid following the layout diagram, cut out square pinwheel units with the Lil’ Twister tool and sewed the squares back together to complete the quilt.  This quilt is throw size.  If I used the Midi Twister, it would be a queen size quilt.  If you are at quilt market, this quilt can be found in the EE Schenck / Maywood Studio booth area.

Now, here are images of quilts using some of our existing patterns and newest fabrics for Houston quilt market:

This is one of my 4-patch kaleidoscope designs, Among the Stars (QM106), using Timeless Treasures’ Suffolk collection designed by Chong-a Hwang coming to shops later this year.

Here is Spinning Wheel Runners (QM140) using Robert Kaufman’s Grand Majolica collection coming to shops in February.  There are 3 colorways which you can see here.

Spinning Wheel Runner QM140 Grand Majorica PURPLE 2015-8-22

Here’s another design, Belle Kaleidoscope (QM125) using the same Grand Majolica collection.  The purple colorway of this quilt and the Spinning Wheel runner above will both be in Robert Kaufman’s booth at quilt market.  See all 3 colorways below and here.

Here’s Belle Kaleidoscope QM125 in Timeless Treasures’ Essex collection which just hit quilt shops.

Essex Belle Kaleidoscope QM125 twin

Belle Kaleidoscope is also one of the patterns I teach in my online Craftsy class “Quilted Kaleidoscopes” which covers every aspect of my 4-patch kaleidoscope quilts from picking fabrics, to making many projects, and attaching the borders.  Click here to see a class summary and get 50% off the class!

Here are images of the other patterns that came out earlier this year, and you can see more info about the patterns: size options, fabrics used, etc. at What’s New on our website.

Chance Encounters (QM143) is strip or FQ friendly.  You can cut 1-1/2″ or 2-1/2″ strips.  You can randomly pair up light and dark strips, so chance encounters seemed like a perfect name for the pattern!

Kensington Kaleidoscope

The quilt shown on the pattern features batiks by Anthology Fabrics.  I cut 1-1/2″ strips for this one, so it is a small throw size.  If I had used 2-1/2″ strips, it would be twin size.

Chance Encounters QM143 Anthology Flowers Batiks

This twin size version was made with fat quarters of Jinny Beyer’s Malam batiks by RJR.  I cut them into 2-1/2″ strips.

Chance Encounters QM143 RJR Jinny Beyer Malam Batiks

Here’s a version using Robert Kaufman’s Artisan Batiks Seasons collection.  It is queen size with the wide border, or twin without the border.

Chance Encounters QM143 RK Artisan Batiks Seasons 2015-7-7

Twister Knot QM142 is a twister tool friendly pattern with 6 sizes mini to king!  Since it combines easy pinwheel strips and large sections of background fabric, this quilt goes together very quickly and can easily be made in one or two weekends for any of the sizes!

Kensington Kaleidoscope

Here are pictures of the many size options from miniature to king size shown in my Minneapolis quilt market booth back in May.

Quilt Market Mpls 2015 Twister Knot QM142 Quilts

Zooming in on the quilts hanging on the wall, the version made in Maywood Studio’s Frolic in the Snow flannel collection is twin size using the Midi Twister tool.  The smaller version hanging (scrunched up:)) to the left is a patriotic version using Northcott Stonehenge and the Lil’ Twister tool for a throw size.

Quilt Market Mpls 2015 Twister Knot Throw & Twin QM142 Quilts

Zooming in again on the quilts on the “couch”, you can see the miniature version made with Moda Bella solids laying on top of the folded up king size quilt made with huge pinwheels.  The mini was made using the Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheel & the king size was made with the Twister tool.

Quilt Market Mpls 2015 Mini & King Twister Knot QM142

The last new pattern of this year was the Keyboard Kaleidoscope (QM102BOM) Block of the Month version of my popular Keyboard Kaleidoscope design.  This larger pattern shows four full color quilt examples, and divides the design into 6 sections, making it perfect for Block of the Month programs.  I was working on this design during my last blog post (yes, sorry, it was way back at the beginning of May before spring market!)

Giveaway Day: 12 yard Fabric Kit, Book plus Pattern of Your Choice!

December 8, 2014

Hi fellow quilters,

I’m participating in the Giveaway Day organized by Sew Mama Sew.  Since I have lots of goodies and couldn’t decide on just one, I decided to include THREE great prizes in the bundle!  My giveaway includes a Twilight Kaleidoscope Kit with 12 yards of Robert Kaufman fabric, my Kaleidoscope Symphony book, and a Quilt Moments pattern of your choice.  The photo below shows my Twister Illusions pattern as an example, however, you can choose any one of my 40 patterns on the website.  All together, this bundle of goodies is worth over $175!

Giveaway QuiltMoments 2014-12-8

If you are visiting my blog for the first time, thank you and welcome.  My name is Marilyn Foreman of Quilt Moments patterns.  I live near St. Paul, Minnesota with my hubby and 3 school age kids.  I’ve been quilting for 18 years and started my pattern business 8 years ago soon after leaving my full-time job to spend more time at home with the kids.

I love all kinds of fabrics, especially brights, and my first passion is designing patterns containing easy four-patch kaleidoscopes which are made by chopping up beautiful large feature prints into simple strip sets of various widths and then sub-cutting them into square sets…no fussy cutting needed!  I also enjoy designing patterns for pre-cuts and scraps, patterns for panels, and patterns featuring the fun Lil’ Twister tool.

Here’s an example of some of the four-patch kaleidoscopes I made this weekend using the new Imperial Garden Blue fabric designed by Chong-a Hwang for Timeless Treasures.

Quilt Moments 4-Patch Kaleidoscopes Imperial Blue

Now, let’s talk about the goodies in the giveaway bundle and how to enter to win!

First, the Twilight Kaleidoscope kit with 12 yards of fabric.  My Craftsy class called “Quilted Kaleidoscopes” demonstrates my kaleidoscope process in detail, shows tons of fabric examples, and includes directions for four projects including two runners and two quilts.  The Twilight Kaleidoscope kit included in the giveaway is featured in the class.  Click here or on the photo below to see more information on the class.  The link gives you a 25% class discount.

Second, with the skills learned in the class you will be able to make any of my kaleidoscope patterns including the designs in my Kaleidoscope Symphony book, which is the next item included in the giveaway.  The book includes directions for 9 different blocks including optional kaleidoscope centers and contains many projects from topper and runner up to queen size.

Third, the giveaway includes a Quilt Moments pattern of your choice.  You choose your favorite pattern.

To enter the giveaway, please leave a comment picking your favorite Quilt Moments pattern so that I can include it in the prize bundle if you are the lucky winner of the giveaway!  You can scroll through all my patterns on my website.  The giveaway closes at midnight CST this Friday, December 12th so please leave your comment before then.

The winner is Mary Peterson!  Congratulations, your big bundle of goodies including the Twilight Kaleidoscope Kit, Kaleidoscope Symphony book, and your pattern choice Twister Illusions, will soon be on its way to you! Thank you so much to everyone for visiting my blog, participating in the SewMamaSew giveaway week and for all your wonderful comments.  Happy Holidays!

Twister Shimmer Quilt for Kona’s 30th Anniversary

November 20, 2014

Hi fellow quilters,

Today is my turn on the Robert Kaufman’s 30 Quilts for 30 Years blog hop to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Kona cotton.

I was so excited to be invited to participate in this fun project.  I’ve enjoyed reading the other designers blog posts about their quilts and getting to know more about the designers and Robert Kaufman Fabrics.  Can’t believe that there are now a whopping 303 Kona colors.  Isn’t that amazing!

I would like to talk about the process of making my quilt and I have a giveaway, too, so keep reading for a chance to win!!!

My quilt for the 30th anniversary is called Twister Shimmer.

QM135 kona twister shimmer 30th ann bh

The original colorway that I used to create the Twister Shimmer pattern (QM135) last year is shown below.  I had fun using my Kona color card to choose a range of shades in four colorways.  The pattern includes a chart showing the 22 Kona fabric ID#’s.  My friend Karen Ytzen pieced the quilt and it was hanging in my booth last year at Houston 2013 quilt market.

Twister Shimmer QM135 with Kona FQs Houston 2013 Market

For the 30th anniversary version, instead of hand picking Kona colors, Nichole at Robert Kaufman suggested that I feature one of their pre-cut fat quarter bundles.  This was a bit of a challenge since I wasn’t sure a bundle would contain enough shades of four colorways needed for the quilt, however, the Sunset fat quarter bundle has a nice variety of shades and can be broken into four groups so I dove into this yummy bundle!

SONY DSC

The bundle contains 23 fat quarters.  I used 22 of the fat quarters plus Kona Black for the background.

Twister Shimmer QM135 30th Anniv Sunset FQ placement

I created a grid of squares following the fabric placement guide.  For this 72″ x 72″ throw size quilt, 5″ squares are sewn into a grid and then cut out with the Lil’ Twister tool designed by Marsha Bergren of Country Schoolhouse Designs.  This popular tool is very easy to use and quite addictive.  It’s so fun creating designs that look difficult yet are very easy to piece.  The Twister Shimmer pattern also includes many other quilt sizes.  If you use the larger Midi Twister tool and 6-1/2″ squares, you can make a queen or king size quilt.  And, if you want to make smaller projects you can use the Primitive Pinwheel or Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheel by Primitive Gatherings to create a 41″ wallhanging or 23″ miniature.

Here’s some Lil’ Twister cutting in action….

Twister Shimmer QM135 30th Anniv WIP with Lil Twister 1

Twister Shimmer QM135 30th Anniv WIP with Lil Twister 2

Magically, after cutting out with the Lil’ Twister and sewing the units back together, the square grid turns into the Twister Shimmer quilt!

QM135-Twister-Shimmer-RK Kona 30th Anniversary

After completing the quilt top, I sent the quilt off to long arm quilter, Kristi Ryan, who did a wonderful job with the quilting.  She used a silver thread in the colors and black thread in the background.  Since we were on such a tight deadline and Kristi sent the quilt directly to Robert Kaufman, I haven’t seen the completed quilt yet, just in photos and I really like the results!

Closeups of Kristi’s quilting…

Twister Shimmer Kristi Ryan quilting closeup 1 web

Twister Shimmer Kristi Ryan quilting closeup 2 web

The Twister Shimmer pattern is very versatile and you can play with shades of your favorite colors to achieve the look you want.  Play with your Kona color card or Kona fabric stash to create your very own quilt palette.  For example, here’s an example of what the quilt looks like using shades of two colors, red and blue, rather than four different colors, and adding white for accent.  Wouldn’t this make a great patriotic quilt?

Ask for the Twister Shimmer pattern at your favorite quilt shop (they can order it from distributors or me) or you can order it here.

Twister Shimmer Kona Patriotic

Thank you for visiting my blog and have fun with the blog hop and enjoy all the designers posts.  The complete schedule is listed in my last blog post. One of my favorite quilts in the Lookbook is Raceway by Alyssa Lichner.  I love the curves and the overlapping effect.

2_Raceway_full

Robert Kaufman is doing a grand prize giveaway at the end of the blog hop which will include 3 of my twister patterns that work great with Kona solids and RK blenders like Fusions including Twister Shimmer, Twister Sparkler, and Twister Illusions which are all shown here:

For a chance to win these goodies, please leave a comment before 10 a.m. CST November 21st.

Quilt Moments 3 New Patterns + Houston Quilt Market

October 24, 2014

Hi fellow quilters,

We’ve been very busy preparing new quilt samples and patterns. The Houston quilt market starts tomorrow!

We wish we could be there to see all the great people and all the new quilting goodies.  We’ll have a booth at the spring quilt market in Minneapolis.

Here are the  3 newest patterns that will be available soon.

You can see more info about the patterns: size options, fabrics used, etc. at What’s New on our website.

QM139-Panel-Twist-Cover-Web

Panel Twist QM139 – great for large prints or panels and the Lil’ Twister tool.

QM140-Spinning-Wheel-Runner

Spinning Wheel Runners QM140 – pick a large print and have fun making easy 4-patch kaleidoscopes with squares and rectangles.

QM141-Spinning-Wheel-Quilts

Spinning Wheel Quilts QM141 – includes 4 sizes throw to king.  More fun with easy 4-patch kaleidoscopes!

Here’s a peek at the fabrics I used for one of my Spinning Wheel Runner samples

Kaleidoscope-Fabric-Lakehou

The fabric is called Sausalito Cottage by Holly Holderman for Lakehouse Dry Goods and it is in quilt shops now.  I just love these large hydrangeas.  The 14″ ruler is shown along the selvage to give you an idea of the scale of the fabric.  The hydrangeas are about 6″ in diameter.  The lengthwise repeat of the fabric (along the selvage) is 12″.  To make any of the Spinning Wheel Runners you only need 4 repeats of a large print (at least 8″ repeat) so in this case you need 1 1/2 yards.  You will have some fabric leftover that you can use for a border or piece together for a scrappy backing.

QM140-SpinningWheelRunner-LHSausalitoCottage

This is the tablerunner size of Spinning Wheel Runners

QM140-SpinningWheelRunner-Closeup

Here’s a close up of one of the large blocks.  It looks difficult, but trust me, it’s very straightforward.  It is made completely with squares and rectangles, and the easy 4-patch kaleidoscope technique of layering and cutting strips from four identical pieces of large print fabric that I use for all my kaleidoscope patterns & book so you’ll be addicted before you know it!  Same process for the Spinning Wheel Quilts, just more blocks and more fabric:)

Here are the quilt samples that are on display in fabric company booths at the Houston quilt market.

QM135-Twister-Shimmer-RK Kona 30th Anniversary

Twister Shimmer (QM135) version made completely with Kona’s Sunset Fat Quarter bundle and Kona black yardage.  Made for Kona’s 30th Anniversary.  Pieced by Marilyn Foreman and quilted by Kristi Ryan.  Stay tuned for the 30th anniversary blog hop starting November 1st.

The quilt is in the Robert Kaufman booth at market.

QM139-Panel-Twist-Twin-TT-F

Panel Twist (QM139) twin version made with Fantasia and Tonga Carnivale batik collections by Timeless Treasures.  Pieced by Marilyn Foreman and quilted by Sandi Moser.

QM121-Elegance-Throw-TT-Vienna

Elegance (QM121) throw sample made with new Vienna collection by Timeless Treasures.  Pieced by Marilyn Foreman and quilted by Sandi Moser.

The Panel Twist and Elegance quilts are both in Timeless Treasures booth at market.

Pinwheel Patterns for Lil’ Twister and Twister Tool

January 8, 2013

Happy New Year fellow quilters!

Hoping to start blogging regularly (or at least monthly).  Making it an actual resolution sounds wrong since that would make it a chore rather than fun so let’s just say I’m optimistic and eager to try!

My friends at Moda have helped me start my blogging goal by inviting me to write an entry for their Moda Cutting Table blog so please read that post tonight and come back here to read the rest of this post and enter to win a kit and patterns!

My patterns have never required special tools or rulers…simply the basic rulers.  I know there are lots of great rulers and templates for different techniques on the market, and yes, I have acquired several but haven’t been inspired to actually incorporate one into some of my patterns until now.

The Lil’ Twister and Twister tools were created by Marsha Bergren of CS Designs (Country Schoolhouse) and they continue to be on the top selling tools lists.  They make it a piece of cake to make pinwheels out of squares.  The Lil’ Twister uses 5” squares and the Twister uses 10” squares.

Image

Image

Three of my patterns feature the popular Lil’ Twister and Twister tools:

Twister Illusions (QM131)

Image

The Twister Illusions pattern works great with solids.  It’s also perfect for batiks.  In the version below I simply changed the placement of the blues and greens and used batiks instead of solids.

Keepsake Quilting is selling this Twister Illusions batik kit on their website.  They also have a kit of my Ribbon Rings quilt.

Image

Twister Tapestry (QM130)

Image

Below is the Twister Tapestry baby and queen layout shown on the pattern back in solids.

Image

Triple Twister (QM127)

Image

All three patterns have the option of multiple sizes from baby to queen or king, and pattern above has table-runner and bed-runner options.  The patterns utilize the Lil’ Twister for the smaller quilts sizes (runner, baby and throw) and the larger Twister tool for the bedrunner and queen size quilts.

You can also use these patterns with other pinwheel tools on the market for smaller pinwheels.  Simply follow the tables inside for the number of squares needed of each fabric and cut square size as directed in the instructions for your tool.

Below are two versions of Triple Twister made with one layer cake (Forty+ 10” squares) plus 1 or 2 backgrounds using Moda’s Tapestry collection by Fig Tree.  This is the kit I’m giving away in honor of my guest blogging on Moda’s Cutting Table.

Version with 1 Background Fabric

Version with 2 Background Fabrics

Which version do you prefer? The winner can choose their favorite version. On the Moda blog I also showed versions in an upcoming fabric line called Snap Pop by Sandy Gervais.

I hope you enjoyed this introduction to my Twister patterns.  Have you used the Lil’ Twister or Twister yet?   I know I’m definitely late to the party since these tools have been out for several years already but perhaps I’m only “fashionably late” since I anticipate these tools will be around for many, many years to come.

Please leave a comment here for a chance to win the Triple Twister Quilt Kit with Tapestry or a collection of the 3 patterns.  The lucky winners will be chosen at random end of the day next Wednesday, January 16th.  This is an especially lucky day since my father and oldest brother (both named Harry!) were born on that day.  Sadly, Dad is no longer with us but he would still want us to celebrate!

And, please “follow” my blog so you can be notified when I make additional posts. I anticipate lots of show and tell and more giveaways.

Enjoy all your Quilt Moments!
